Important, only use the screws provided with your board. Using longer, shorter, mismatched, or bent screws can damage the inserts — potentially stripping the thread or breaking the water seal.
Our footstrap inserts come blank (unthreaded). On first install, you’ll need slightly more effort as the screw cuts its initial thread into the insert.
– Before you begin, make sure the screw and insert hole are clean and free of sand or debris.
– Adjust asymmetrical metal washers to fine-tune fit — rotating one or both sides will slightly tighten or loosen strap width.
– Place the strap with plastic tooth washers facing up against the strap, and the drop pin aligned with the insert.
– Tighten the screw until the strap is snug and doesn’t twist — but don’t overtighten.
– Expect to retighten after a few minutes or after your first session — the strap and pad compress slightly with use, often allowing for another quarter turn.
– Always clean the strap area and insert holes before removing or reinstalling screws. Sand inside the insert can ruin the thread.
– Remove one strap at a time to preserve the original match/thread pattern.
– Replace any bent screws or worn anti-twist plastic washers (between the strap and board).
– Adjust asymmetrical metal washers to fine-tune fit — rotating one or both sides will slightly tighten or loosen strap width.
Very Important
Place the strap with plastic tooth washers facing up against the strap, and the drop pin aligned with the insert.
2. Before tightening, turn the screw counterclockwise (reverse) until you feel it drop into the existing thread.
3. Once aligned, tighten by hand until snug.
4. If using a power tool, only use it midway — always start and finish by hand for better control and feel.
– Screws must be tight enough that the strap won’t spin, but not so tight that they damage the insert.
– Loose screws lead to thread damage — always double-check after your first session in a new position.
– Use a #3 manual screwdriver.
– Ensure the screwdriver and screw head are clean and undamaged.
– Always insert the driver straight into the screw head — a poor fit can strip the head.
– If a thread becomes stripped, you can switch to a one-size thicker screw on that insert – Attention: If you force a larger screw into an undamaged insert, it can crack the insert. If it feels too tight going in, try gently working it back and forth.— just make sure not to mix it up when rotating or replacing straps.
– If you don’t have a larger screw on hand and you find your self in the middle of a session with a striped thread, you can also use toothpicks as a temporary fix. Just pack the stripped hole with a few toothpicks, insert the screw, remove it, and add more toothpicks as needed until the screw goes in tightly. Pouring water on the toothpicks afterward will expand the wood and help lock everything in place. It’s a great trick if you’re in the middle of a session and need a quick fix.
